Shawshank Redemption

Watching Shawshank Redemption always stirs up old thoughts about prisons and discourses surrounding "rehabilitation." Tonight while I was re-watching the classic, I was thinking about prison, and punishment in general, in terms of pleasure. Can punishment be seen as the temporal withholding of pleasure? And if so, what does this practice do? And what does this show about religious practice that values postponing pleasure? What does it even mean to withhold pleasure from someone? Can it be done? What do we find pleasurable in some circumstances that we wouldn't in others?
